“The agenda I'm offering to people is an economic U-turn in this country: the moving away from the alleviation of stress to fundamental economic reform. Those are two different visions, not only of the country going forward, but of what it will take to beat the Republicans in 2024. People should have that option and think very deeply about which way should we go. In a democracy, the voice of the people should decide.”currentaffairs.org/2023/03/m…

Pushing back a neo-fascist authoritarian threat is absolutely the primary challenge of our time. But we won’t be able to do that unless we’re willing to analyze how we became so vulnerable to it to begin with. Yes, there is a malignant narcissist who had a lot to do with it. Plus, social media as well. But there was something more, something even more insidious that weakened our democracy and left us open to the threat. FDR said we wouldn’t have to worry about a fascist takeover “as long as democracy delivered on its blessings.” And that is where we’ve failed. The fact that people do not have healthcare, do not have a livable wage, cannot go to college or send their kids to college, do not get help with child care, feel so little economic wind at their back…those speak to the the “blessings of democracy” that our system has failed to deliver. And that is what has weakened our societal immune system. Providing such things now, like a massive infusion of hope and opportunity, is the boost to our immune system without which we will have a very hard time keeping the disease at bay. Too late for vitamins. We need a quick IV.

Given that every day someone is spewing lies and painting the ugliest picture of me, on what possible basis do you think this is good for my vanity?

Twelve million children are hungry in America. There should not be even one.

In the field of books that I write, the way to be commercially successful is to never ever ever mention politics. The way to sell books is to go on a book tour, not a campaign trail.

I’ve read your last paragraph three times and I don’t know what in the world you’re talking about.

We have more than a two-tier system in the United States. We have a royalist system in the United States. The economic royalists (FDR's term) basically rule over everyone else, their undue influence enabling them to reach their corporate tentacles into every corner of our lives. From the food we eat to the water we drink to the healthcare we receive to the cost of education to the way we raise our children to how so many are shackled with debt that no one should have to carry, none of this is normal or acceptable in the richest country in the world. But absolutely, let's just keep voting for the status quo. It's working so well.... for them.

I guess you figure we should repeal those child labor laws while we’re at it?

Economic anxiety is absolutely at the heart of much of the mental health crisis. And I am VERY serious.
