Why are you saying it’s uncool to recognize that thousands of lives could’ve been saved through a more responsible evacuation? Seriously. Please explain.

You also have real problems if you’re not in grief and horror over how we bungled the exit - failing to evacuate thousands who had helped us, betraying friends and allies now left to die. The manner in which we left was as important as how long we stayed.

I said “today” - to get more people out. That is what I said.

That’s my point.

People can turn against me if they wish; I’m pretty used to it by now, I do not apologize, so yes I guess that means I’m doubling down, on my support for Afghan women.

I totally stand by what my tweet was saying. We needed public pressure on Biden to get him to send planes to evacuate more women. You might not think that’s “intelligent;” I do.

My wording in a tweet was stupid, but only because I was hurriedly responding to activists begging for public pressure on the president. My choice of words was wrong but my heart was not. I can sleep fine tonight despite the mockery.

So the groups I talk to and the human rights activists I know are stupid but the ones you know - do you know any? - are smart. Got it.

What we could’ve done is had an exit strategy with a deep humanitarian focus on rescuing the thousands of people who helped us, worked with us, and are likely to be massacred now.

No “easy exit?” Thousands more people could have been rescued. People who helped us, who worked with us. Women who will be massacred. This isn’t just about “whether” you go; it’s about “how” you go. I’m not embarrassed to refuse to go to along with the popular groupthink on this.

Absolutely not. And I’m not even making an argument for staying. I’m talking about the failure of our strategy while we were there and the irresponsibility of the way in which we exited.

Exactly right.
“Yes, the US and the west should stop endless wars of imperial conquest. But it’s unconscionable to throw 38 million Afghans to feral wolves and squander hard-fought social and educational advances women and minorities have made over the last two decades.” independent.co.uk/independen…

So many thousands of people dead and so many billions of dollars spent on a strategy that was clearly nothing but a stop gap. An extraordinary fail. But the worst part of all is how criminally negligent they have been with the exit. How many will die who should have been rescued?
