In every area where this country is wounded there are people of extraordinary expertise who know how to heal it. But in the vast majority of cases those people & projects are underresourced & underfunded. We can’t heal our country if our bottom line goal remains corporate profits

The way to do that is to get the money out of politics. With the current make up of SCOTUS we’re not going to overturn Citizens United anytime soon, but there are legislative initiatives and we need constitutional amendment establishing public funding of all federal campaigns.

I believe we’re on the earth to do God’s will, and that means we’re here to love one another. Not just as individuals, but as nations. To heal the sick. To do justice. To help the poor. To take care of the little ones. To steward well the earth. To seek peace. And to forgive.

Sotomayor and Kagan are doing a near heroic job of trying to compensate for the loss of Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

You know how many counselors we have in our public schools? One for every 1500 children. You know how many chronically traumatized children we have in America? Tens of millions. You know how many billionaires we have in America? 635. And none of that is by accident.

Poverty isn’t a symptom of societal dysfunction; it’s a symptom of political dysfunction.

Poverty isn’t just financial hardship; it’s psychological & emotional trauma that increases the probability of violence, addiction & even death by despair. It’s a petri dish out of which emerges the worst kinds of societal dysfunction. Our goal should be its complete eradication.

If more of the rich really knew what it meant to be poor in America and more of the poor really knew what it meant to be rich in America, we would have a very different country.

No, not baby steps! I supported Biden in the election & there were many things I didn’t say then because I didn’t want to increase cynicism. But now it’s time for truth telling. Incrementalism, baby steps, what MLK called “the tranquilizing drug of gradualism” is not the answer.
