First we had to get rid of a neo- fascist threat in the WH. Done. Second we have to stop the bleed for tens of millions of people living in abject economic despair. Third we have to start envisioning what we want this country to look like on the other side of this period of pain

No, what we should investigate are those who knowingly persuaded tens of millions of people to have such a deluded sense of things.

I was glad to hear Biden say when he thinks about the state of the economy he doesn’t think about the state of the stock market but about the state of the average person’s wallet. Very important point: the richest 1% own half of the stock market & the bottom 50% own 0.7% of it.

Some demonize the idea govt should do anything for people - til they themselves need help, at which point they take everything they can get & their only complaint is that the check didn’t arrive fast enough. It’s only a “handout” if it’s for other people. idahostatesman.com/news/poli…

I don’t know when it’s going to happen nor how much pain needs to happen first, but there’s no way this time of crisis isn’t going to ultimately lead to a social & political renaissance. This much shattering of illusions can’t help but lead to the emergence of some hidden truths.

But they can convey the pain and outrage created by the economic injustice of this moment, in a way that the economist cannot.

What we’re going through socially, politically and economically is so huge that only artists and poets can adequately convey it. The news media can report the news but for the most part now seems incapable of deciphering its meaning.

No, that’s just honestly looking in the mirror. Those are exactly the kind of things that *need* to be looked at. But there is a universal judgementalness, a refusal to acknowledge anything that America has ever done right, that obstructs rather than serves the process of repair.

That’s the honest look in the mirror that I’m talking about.

America deserves neither the Right’s delusional self-congratulations nor the Left’s knee jerk condemnation. It deserves citizens who will take an honest look in the mirror, honor our ancestors for where they got it right and repair the things that are so clearly broken.
