They both work in some ways and don’t work in other ways. The most enlightened societies are a combination of both.

Your hypothesis is contrary to established facts.

The mindset of the 21st-Century must be different than that of the 20th. We won’t survive another 100 years on this planet unless we transition from a win-lose to a win-win paradigm. None of us will survive unless we turn our attention to all of us being able to.

Politics is the only area of American society where we continue to have a 20th-century conversation lacking in any integrative or whole person perspective and pretend it’s sophisticated enough to get us where we need to go.

Obsessive self-reference has turned rugged individualism to rugged narcissism. It’s not a characterological strength but a characterological pathology. Transitioning into a more collaborative and cooperative model of relationship is our only sustainable option for human survival.

Pentagon budget is roughly $780B; some argue it’s actually more. That’s hundreds of billions of $ more than military leaders even say they need. If we cut it 20% to make every public school in America a palace of learning, culture & the arts, our future would be far more secure.

My daughter is a PhD student in religious history and she has explained to me about how that split occurred in the shift from Catholicism to Protestantism. We were founded by Calvinists so it all makes sense.

“Without impacting taxes” for WHO? For billionaires who have gotten richer from the pandemic? For the top .001% earners who we keep giving tax cuts to for no real reason than that they have the power to influence Congress? And more $ in people’s hands would stimulate the economy!

And THAT is the religious and spiritual contest underneath it all.

I have thought a lot about what the factors were that led to whatever success I’ve had in my life, and I would say the top 3 were: 1/ someone helped me, 2/ someone helped me, and 3/someone helped me.

The poor are not people who work less hard than the rich. The poor are not those who are less deserving than the rich. The poor are not those with less potential than the rich. The poor are simply those less visible than the rich to those who have the power to affect their lives.

Both economically and politically, the U.S. is so devoid of long-term thinking that we create future catastrophes with cavalier disregard. Every American child going hungry right now is going to be an angry and traumatized adult 10 or 15 years from now.
