There are a few myths more inspiring than the idea of a nation “conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” It doesn’t get better than that. It’s what people have struggled for in every generation and it’s what we’re struggling for today

I disagree with that. We answered slavery with abolition, we answered institutionalized oppression of women with the women’s suffragette movement, we answered segregation with the civil rights movement. There is shame there but also a lot to be proud of in our history.

The real story is a huge dichotomy: we were founded on the most aspirational principles, but even among those who signed the Declaration of Independence 41 out of the 56 were slaveowners. The constant struggle between those two faces of the American character - that IS our story.

I think people are smarter than we give them credit for.

For me it’s in the Declaration of Independence. With 11 states not even requiring half a year of American civics, history of government, too many Americans grow up now not really appreciating or even learning the American story.

As profound as our problems are, that’s how profound the level of transformation we have to achieve in order to be able to solve them.

Have you noticed how often the right people are called up for Congressional hearings, then absolutely nothing happens to reflect what Congress learned from them? This is an example. Why is Congress so afraid of Facebook? businessinsider.com/former-f…

Facebook’s monopolistic influence on the news is criminal even if it isn’t illegal. And tech companies need to be regulated by a Fairness Doctrine applicable to the realities of the 21st-century.
.@ClaraJeffery and I dug into what exactly is behind reports that Facebook tweaked its algorithm to improve results for conservative publishers and make them worse for Mother Jones. And... wow. motherjones.com/media/2020/1…

This ruling is an effort by our own government to limit the practice of democracy. With Amy Barrett on the court it will get even more extreme. npr.org/2020/10/21/926472968…

None of this is enough if no one goes to prison! If you’re poor in America you go to jail but if you’re rich enough you’re more likely to be able to “make a settlement.” Hundreds of thousands of people died because of this; it needs to be punished by far more than a big write-off
BREAKING: Justice Department officials tell The Associated Press that Purdue Pharma, the company that makes OxyContin, will plead guilty to three federal criminal charges as part of a settlement of more than $8 billion. apne.ws/0MJlwTx

Don’t tell a black person they’re never in danger of being arrested for no reason; don’t tell a Jew they’ll never have to worry about being rounded up; and don’t tell a woman she’s never being underestimated because of her gender. We know better. Ancestors don’t lie.
