No socioeconomic group has a monopoly on values; there are saints and jerks in every group. But I have noticed some of the most pernicious ideas come out of the mouths of some of the most well dressed people, and some of the greatest wisdom from those who have absolutely nothing.

That’s a complicated race and it needs to be left in the hands of Mainers.

If people can’t get an education or healthcare & can’t get out from under college loan debts, it’s more than that they can’t get into the game economically. The forces that would keep them out of the game aren’t just doing it to deny them money; they’re doing it to deny them power

The economic fortress. Its walls are invisible but just as real.

I’m not anti-capitalist; I think the most enlightened society has aspects of capitalism & socialism. But we’ve drifted into a virulent strain of capitalism, with no ethical or moral responsibility to people or planet. It will correct that, or a generation will storm the Bastille.

How can you preach the virtues of capitalism to people who don’t have any capital? It takes capital to be a capitalist. I totally understand why so many young people are saying “What the hell has global capitalism ever done for me?”

What do you think billions of dollars in corporate subsidies & trillions of dollars in tax cuts to the richest individuals & corporations are doing? Do you think your money isn’t going to other people now? Your money is going to people who probably have much much more than you do

I hear so many young people say that now, fearing they won’t be able to. And this is the richest country in the world. That more than anything else convinced me that something is very, very wrong.

What do you think billions of $ in subsidies & trillions of $ in tax cuts to the wealthiest individuals & corporations are if not “giving them things for free?” MLK Jr. said “If they give it to the rich they call it a subsidy; if they give it to the poor they call it a handout.”

When I think of Medicare4All, free tuition & cancellation of college debts, to me it’s not “giving people things” - it’s releasing people from economic shackles that keep them from being able to soar, to be their creative and productive best. THAT’s the key to peace & prosperity.
