Patriotism is very different than nationalism. When you don’t provide an enlightened sense of the former you actually pave the way for the latter.

3/ In truth, human beings are hardwired for connection to both tribe & moral sensibility. If you don’t give them a genuine version, they become easy prey for those who are peddling the counterfeit version. Patriotism and public morality are topics that should belong to all of us.

2/ The right doesn’t walk it’s talk but the left doesn’t talk it walk, too often sneering at issues of the heart with a condescension that has sent millions of people to the other side of the political divide.

1/ Of all the things the left surrendered to the right over the last 40 years, patriotism and morality are the two that have hurt us the most.

And why? For the ratings. If America doesn’t make it through this is awful period, they can put on the gravestone of American democracy, “They did it all for the money.”
NBC wasn’t conned into doing anything. They are consciously, intentionally helping Trump by giving him a megaphone after he ducked a presidential debate.

2/ “To feed the children Ms. Jeffcoat said she sometimes skips meals, especially at the end of the month when the food stamps have run out. Her husband sold his tools to buy diapers and Ms. Jeffcoat tried to sell her eggs to a fertility clinic, but she did not medically qualify.”

Almost 40 million Americans lived in poverty even before the pandemic. 40% of Americans couldn’t afford a $400 unexpected expenditure even before the pandemic. Those people have not gone away, they’ve just fallen into deeper levels of hunger, suffering, despair...and invisibility

If the justice system works – and clearly it is not perfect - then when someone is released from prison theoretically they have been rehabilitated. Are you under the impression that a constant reminder of their shame will aid them in living a more righteous life? I don’t see it.

We should view it as a core principle of American justice: once someone has paid their debt to society, the debt has been paid. We should be welcoming people back into society & encouraging them to fulfill their civic responsibilities, not creating obstructions to their doing so.
The Sentencing Project released a new study estimating that 5.2 million people will be barred from voting in the 2020 election due to a felony conviction. In 2016, that number was over 6 million. Progress, but still a long way to go. sentencingproject.org/wp-con…

She’s a good one!
If you’re in California, there are only 5 days left to register to vote! Don’t forget to tell your friends and family to register too. This election is too important to sit this one out. #RegisterToVote #VOTE #VoteAngelicaForCongress #EastSanFernandoValley

Sometimes but not all the time. At our worst we’ve been terrible but at our best we’ve been fantastic. I think it’s the task of our generation to understand the underlying dynamic so we can better fulfill our role in moving us in the right direction. We took our eye off the ball.
