A characterological dichotomy is part of America’s DNA. The history of every generation encapsulates the struggle between two aspects of the American mind.

600,000 died in the Civil War; we can hardly say there hasn’t been accountability. Have we gone far enough? No. Have we in ways even moved backwards in the last 40 years? Yes. But American history is an ongoing story. MLKJr. himself called the constitution his “promissory note.”

The process you want to see begins by adhering to the constitution, not tearing it up.

Every nation IS unique and exceptional in some sense, but not every nation was founded on principles of human equality & liberty. That’s why so many people all around the world are freaking out that we’re messing up so bad.

This country’s founding was a profound moment in history, laying claim to a vision of human possibility that we’ve never fully manifested but which has inspired every generation. Now it’s our turn to decide whether liberty and justice will prevail. It’s not a given; it’s a choice

No we do not need a new Constitution. We need to adhere to the one we have more closely if anything. We do need a constitutional amendment to provide public funding for federal campaign, and we should pass the Equal Rights amendment.

You mean like the Supreme Court in the year 2000 violating the part where it says that states run their own elections? You mean like that kind of judicial activism?

Uh, slavery was allowed. Slaves were considered 3/5 of a human being. And women could not vote. Yes, the Constitution DOES change over time!

Amy Coney Barrett on originalism: "That means that I interpret the Constitution as a law... I understand it to have the meaning that it had at the time people ratified it. That meaning doesn't change over time and it's not up to me to update it or infuse my policy views into it."

It seems to me it’s both. I think it’s the American people realizing the system seeks to keep them out, but their refusing to acquiesce.

This is a tweet from the German ambassador to the United States. Message much?
Hannah Arendt, a German Jew, political theorist and philosopher, was born on this day in 1906. One of her many legacies: Totalitarianism can flourish where people systematically refuse to engage with reality, and are ready to replace reason with ideology and outright fiction.

The reason ballots did not elect a progressive president was only because of the suppression of that progressive candidate. You know that. Bernie would’ve won. So we know what the work needs to be, and it doesn’t involve guns.
