There were truly touching stories from very real people at the convention & it was masterful the way they highlighted them. But the truth is that his policies have caused pain & suffering & even death for many, many people over the last four years.
Unfortunately, no. The real bottom would come in a second term. Michelle Obama was right when she said if you think it couldn’t get any worse, trust me it could.
The Portland where I awoke this morning bears no resemblance to the lies Trump spewed about my hometown last night. Trump’s words — & his actions these past few months — do nothing to help our community come together to oppose systemic racism or violence from any quarter.
He didn’t handle Covid well; quite the opposite. He didn’t create a lot of jobs in the states he mentioned; quite the opposite. He didn’t protect pre-existing conditions; he tried to get rid of Obamacare. And no he hasn’t “done so much for black people;” he demonizes their cause.
The people who were talking about those things were genuinely touching. Authentic and real. The lie is that Trump’s policies for the most part run completely opposite to the needs of those very people.
The issue is a $360 billion arms sale to Saudi Arabia. In exchange the US gives air support to SA’s genocidal war in Yemen. Tens of thousands have died, including children. There was a bipartisan effort to stop it (led by Bernie) but Trump vetoed it.
That’s a good thing of course. Also the work of the Lincoln Project etc. But the Democratic convention spent more time highlighting Republicans than it did highlighting whole swaths of Democrats & their issues.
There’s actually more truth there than most people would like to admit. Years ago people in the Democratic Party decided we were too cool to talk about morality or patriotism. Which is tragic, because when you don’t give that to people they’ll be taken in by a counterfeit version
Why don’t the Democrats focus on courting Democrats and worry a bit less about courting Republicans? I’m certainly not a genius at math, but that would make sense.
