Tonight is a good opportunity for all of us to let politics go for a moment, to think with our hearts and send prayers and goodwill to a family that’s obviously in crisis. 💗🙏🏻💗

I wish you well. It’s very painful to watch what goes on there every night.

From what I hear, it was performative - not moderated by a mediator who could bring about some higher level of reconciliation and agreement. That’s where is going to have to start, not just in this situation but in many of the things we’re doing with this country.

The only part of the ruling elite that does that is the television channels, which definitely thrive on creating a greater sense of competition than has to be there.

Who do you think I lack empathy for?

It certainly would’ve been mine.

I don’t even recognize that party anymore. I’m sure a lot of Republicans feel the same way.

4/ I almost choked. I told myself “OK Marianne, practice what you preach.” He didn’t realize what a lib I was etc. I found that neutral spot inside & then I started talking, after which he blew my mind when he said: “I could go along with that. I think most conservatives could.”

3/ So we obviously had started to think that we had all these shared values & then the conversation turned to the issue of evil. He said to me “I’ll tell you when evil set into this country.” Of course I’m thinking, “Reaganomics!” And he said, “When they made abortion legal.”

2/ Something amazing happened to me on an airplane about 20 years ago. I was talking to this really nice doctor who was coming back from doing all this great work with people with medical problems overseas. We were having a great conversation about the world, God etc.

1/ I’ve had experiences in my life of people making the most amazing transformations in their outlook on an issue once I changed inside myself and they didn’t feel subconsciously like I was judging them. All minds are joined, and everybody wants to feel affirmed.

Actually no. What you’re saying about the system is accurate but we’re talking about something else completely.
MLK Jr. said “we have very little morally persuasive power with people who can feel our underlying contempt.” We have to find that neutral place where we’re not judging people before we even talk to them. That inner activism precedes the outer effectiveness we wish for.

I don’t think of the people you refer to as “reasonable people of goodwill.”

I know principled conservatives who don’t believe that at all. I admit they’ve pretty much been pushed out of the Republican party, but they exist and I think they’re still out there.

No. That would not be “reasonable people of goodwill.”
