The Proud Boys are not “reasonable people of goodwill,”
nor are neofascists. But that’s my point. By principled people on both Left and Right making each other the enemy, we created a space for the real crazies to emerge. (It was the media that fostered that, by the way)

No side of the political spectrum has a monopoly on truth, moral values or on how much or how well they love their children. Both are blinded by any thought that they do. We’ve got to reclaim a golden mean in politics where reasonable people of goodwill simply disagree sometimes.

I’d be glad to help - it’s the kind of work I do - but Portland is filled with sophisticated professionals who know exactly how to mediate this kind of situation & who know the dynamics of Portland infinitely better than I do. We have got to take politics to that deeper place.

Democrats are not behind it anymore than the Republicans are behind it. To be honest, centuries of history is behind it. We need to stop blaming and start deep communication, for the sake of our country and for the sake of our great grandchildren.

This is absolutely true; I remember it. And I remember some who were angered by the report and tried to suppress it.
As painful as it is, we must work hard to remember that the FBI warned us 14 years ago white supremacists were infiltrating police depts. Nobody paid attention then. Now they run the depts: google.com/amp/s/www.pbs.org…

.@tedwheeler Why are you not having a public forum where police and Black Lives Matter & city leaders are working on having a deeper communication? Portland is full of the kind of people who know how to facilitate that kind of thing.

Okay. So theoretically police have been trying to deal with that. But then shouldn’t they also deal with violence if it’s committed by the Proud Boys, who were definitely attacking people?

So let’s get clear. When the Proud Boys came to attack Left wing protesters, the police stayed away & didn’t intervene. But after the Proud Boys and their ilk left, the protesters who remained were told that they’re involved in an unlawful assembly and the police came after them?
