Ridiculous. So should we never quote Jefferson? Lincoln? Roosevelt? Kennedy? None of them were “pure,” you know.

That’s why I said there’s so much to think about. In some situations, obviously the standard police model is needed. But think how many situations we look at in terms of police might be better served by social workers, people with nonviolent communication skills, mediators etc.

Much to think about here...
Police And Their Apologists Have Already Lost The Argument "Turns out all it took to publicly expose a pervasive epidemic of violent tendencies in the police force was for the public to begin protesting violent tendencies in the police force." medium.com/@caityjohnstone/p…

Is there a difference between race-based policies and reparations? “Race based policies are different than reparations because reparations carry moral force. They’re an inherent recognition of a wrong that was done and a debt that is owed.” mariannenow.com/posts/repara…

No more traditionally American notion than that our country belongs to its people. A radical proposition? Yes. But not as in politically radical. It’s philosophically radical, as much so today as in 1776. We’ve never fully embodied it, but it’s the job of every generation to try.

Trump said today the policy is to "dominate the streets." But who does he think the streets belong to? They belong to us. Our tax dollars paid for the roads, the traffic lights, and for that matter for the police. When people peacefully protest, we're doing so on our own streets.

It's not just one issue now; it's an entire system that's the problem. Lincoln said "a govt of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth" but it's perishing now. As long as a corporate aristocracy holds the power, the people will be ill served.

There was a difference between being "anti-slavery" and being an Abolitionist. Being anti-slavery was noble but of itself didn't necessarily help one slave. Being an Abolitionist meant you'd crossed the line from "I'm against it" to "Not on my watch!" And that's where we are now.

Yes, but not everyone who was anti-slavery was an Abolitionist. It’s the difference between “I’m against it” and “Not on my watch.”

We can’t just stand for something; we have to move our feet for something. It wasn’t enough to be anti-slavery; you had to cross the bridge of courage to become an Abolitionist. It’s not enough to be against systematic racism; we must be for reparations & criminal justice reforms

What do you call an established pattern of execution of unarmed black man? Just a bunch of unfortunate coincidences...?

Yeah, well. No one knows better than I what that was all about. I was inside the belly of the beast for a year. But I’m still going to do whatever I have to do to feel like I’ve done my part to get Trump out of the White House. To me there’s no moral equivalence there.

I wish I could say I’m shocked. I’m horrified but no longer shocked. Clearly the word has gone out at the highest levels that nationwide protests, even peaceful ones, will not be tolerated. This is not just an attack on our people, it’s an attack on our Constitution. #VoteThemOut

No ending systemic racism without ending entrenched economic injustice that keeps it in place. All the "I've looked into my heart to examine my privilege" in the world isn't a substitute for political action. If you owe me money I appreciate an apology - but I also want my $ back
