Yep.
We've focused a lot on the activation of the National Guard, but I hope people are also seeing the all-out militarization of police departments in cities around the country. The government has been equipping local police departments with military equipment for many years.

A crisis triggers underlying issues. It’s not just about Floyd, but about a string of similar deaths. Not just about race, but about economic & social injustice in general. Not just about Trump, but about a political class that has acted for years as though it doesn’t give a damn

Feels deeper than that to me. More like a desire to erase. 🤔

2/ This rebellion cannot be suppressed, it must be accommodated. It cannot be squelched, it must be dealt with. It cannot just be “heard,” it must be responded to. Only fundamental change in a just direction will do. If anyone doesn’t understand, read Yertle the Turtle. You will.

1/ What is happening in America today was completely predictable. None of this came from out of the blue. For decades, the political class created an endless string of pleasures for the few and miseries for the many that could not go on forever.

This is one of my tweets from Nov. 2017.
Making a few people rich & the majority of people their economic serfs is not the way to run a country. It's the way to ruin a democracy. But people are waking up to this & in the years ahead we're going to see a citizen uprising that will shatter all expectations. I can feel it.

You’re right. In the words of Cornel West, “The system has proved incapable of reforming itself.”

Absolutely.
There are lots of politicians sitting in their living rooms, watching this all on TV with no first hand knowledge of facts on the ground, releasing wildly confident statements about who these protestors are and what their agenda is.

Yep.
More peaceful protestors and journalists have been jailed in the past week than all the bankers who were jailed for fraud during the financial collapse.

Suggested plan for reparations: $500B+ to be disbursed over 20 years to a reparations council of black leaders from different areas, from businesspeople to educators and social workers. Money to be used for purposes of educational and economic renewal as determined by the council

We’re at phase 1. John Conyers proposed HR 40 years ago. Darrity, Coates etc write about it. I spoke about it at the second Democratic debate. The important thing is to get the conversation into the public sphere. With what’s going on now, this is the time to push it forward more.

How the reparations council (all black people) chose to spend the money would be up to the reparations council. If they were to say that they felt the best economic stimulus would be to just send every black person a certain amount of money, then that would be their decision.

Right. That’s definitely the way to get the conversation started.

How would you even do that?

The US government would be paying the money. And you think there’s not a negotiation to that? That someone’s going to just tell the US government what they’re supposed to pay, to whom and how? And “Who the hell do I think I am?” Someone giving my own ideas on my own Twitter page.
