The president just said Minneapolis has to be “tougher.” He said the police have to be “respected” by all these “protesters, who are radical left, very bad people.” Fortunately the mayor of Minneapolis and the governor of Minnesota are speaking truth.

It’s a mistake to leave it out of our analysis all the successes that have been achieved as well. It does dishonor to our ancestors, who in many cases did a whole lot more than we have done to push back against racial injustice. American history is a story w/ many twists & turns.

The biggest violence is not what’s happening today, but rather the chronic violence of political, economic and criminal injustices that has accumulated over the last 40 years. That violence was tolerated by the same establishment that today is telling everyone not to be violent.

Really appreciated LZ Granderson pointing out that we always say “violence is not the answer” to protesters, but we rarely say it to the State Department or the military-industrial-complex. Bingo.

You don’t know that. You don’t know the numbers. You’re just assuming that. It’s no different than defining any other group by their shadow element.

I don’t disagree with you there. I think the men who were there with Chauvin should be tried as accomplices to a murder. But the larger point remains the same.

But it’s true. None of this is simple. I do believe the police have been infiltrated by white supremacists and I have not been afraid to say it. But that absolutely does not mean that every policeman is a white supremacist and I think it’s important to remember that too.

Majority of policepeople are good & decent public servants. Ones I know are as politically aware of what’s going on in this country as is anyone else. Let’s include them in our prayers today. The situation is very complicated, very dangerous. Let’s pray that love & peace prevail.

Of course I denounce people looting & burning in name of civil rights! But I also know white supremacists are using these protests to create violence meant to appear like it’s coming from protesters. They purposely create chaos. Legitimate protesters are not those doing damage.

America is going to change now. No longer a question; it’s a certitude. Our choices are violent change or peaceful change. We know what violent change looks like & it’s horrifying. Peaceful change begins w/ radical truth telling, & atonement that gets to the heart of things. NOW.

Desperate people do desperate things. The geniuses who thought an ongoing pattern of execution of unarmed black men by American police could just continue forever, underestimated the power of the human spirit. No people in history has been willing to take such abuse forever.

.@JoeBiden should make a statement today committing to reparations. Don’t wait another day, Joe. No commission. No study. None of that is enough! An actual plan on the table. Start negotiations at $500B. My plan from the campaign. mariannenow.com/issues/the-r…

4/ Trump is already having military units prepared to deploy to Minneapolis. If democratic party leadership doesn’t come up with a plan for bold fundamental changes it will be a huge strategic mistake. The era of politics as usual is over; need for enlightened leadership now here

3/ It’s reasonable to expect nothing but a crackdown law-and-order mentality from McConnell, but @SpeakerPelosi and @JoeBiden could at this moment break free of their neo-liberal container, reclaim the soul of the Democratic Party, and actually make a difference. I hope they do.

2/ Cornell West was right when he said the system has proven “incapable of reforming itself.” We know at this point what to expect from Trump, but Congressional leaders should be listening up and taking heed.
