So when someone says “Oh that sounds good but how would we pay for it?”- ask them how we paid for that bailout the other day. And helping the people thrive, removing the crushing economic burden that sits on top of so many people, will create a lot money by the way. For everyone.

When every citizen has the best public education in the world, a free higher ed/technical school beyond that, accessible health insurance and college loan debts cancelled, there will be an explosion of creativity and productivity in this country unlike anything we’ve ever seen.

No one is saying it is, but we’d be naïve to think brute force on any level wouldn’t be met by overwhelming suppression. That’s why there’s a spiritual element to all this as there was in the Indian Independence movement & the civil rights movement. We have to speak to conscience

Money in politics and voter suppression is how the will of the people is fundamentally obstructed at this point. But a massive wave of voter participation in spite of that is central to the transformation.

We need political leaders who demand that compassion and humanitarian concern be at the core of public policy. That is what’s lacking. We have a top down rather than a bottom up economic system - and that’s the problem. That’s the shift that can happen now.

Actually we do not. We give only .06% of our discretionary funding to humanitarian issues, far less than every other advanced democratic country. Capitalism has done a lot of good, it’s true, but it’s shadow side has done a lot of harm as well. Time to restore its conscience.

Even Adam Smith said “free market capitalism cannot survive outside an ethical context.” Since the 1980’s, trickle down economics has disconnected capitalism from any sense of moral or ethical responsibility. It has corrupted our democracy; it’s time to choose another way.

Pushing back against overreach by American capitalism is a patriotic tradition. It’s why we have child labor laws. It’s why we have unions. It’s why we have financial & safety regulations. Government “of the people, by the people & for the people” is not some radical leftist plot

I’m not an anti-capitalist. I think the most enlightened societies have elements of capitalism and socialism. In social democracies it’s both/and. The free market is good; it’s just that not enough people in America can get into it now! To tens of millions of people it’s not free

The system we have now is not guided by compassion, it is guided by amoral economic principles. The shadow side of American capitalism is literally an unsustainable organizing principle for a survivable 21st century. Ethics and concern for the common good must be our bottom line.
