In the silence, the sadness, the fear and the depths of it - there’s also wonder, and heroism, and vulnerability and love. There is a mystery to all of this that only the heart can recognize. When we’re most afraid of death is when we’re most aware of life.

When the pandemic is over, I want the United States to treat every doctor and nurse who worked on this like the heroes that they are.

I actually don’t have a conservative-hatred. Eisenhower said that the American mind at its best is both liberal & conservative, and I agree with that. Although I’m not a conservative I recognize that there are high minded conservative principles. That is NOT who Trump is, however

One travel ban wasn’t some huge bold decision. The Defense Production Act should have been put into effect immediately, and the entire industrial manufacturing sector fully mobilized to create all needed tests and equipment.

I do not understand how a one- time payment of $1200 is going to be enough. It’s not just whether or not the virus will be kept at bay; it’s whether or not despair will be kept at bay. Putting tens of millions of people at risk for such intense anxiety is a recipe for disaster.

The private sector cannot act quickly enough. Obviously!!! This is not something that should be left to a voluntary basis, for God’s sake. It should have been full industrial and manufacturing mobilization, no different than if we were at war. Because we are.

Governors cannot direct private industry to do anything. They made it clear they would pay any price. It’s on the federal level that the president could have directed the manufacture of needed equipment.

Not true at all. The Defense Production Act gave him the executive power to do what was needed. People EXPECT that at a time of national emergency.

I understand Trump’s consciousness. Not news to anyone. But what about the people around him? Has no one been begging, demanding that he use his power over the last few weeks? Is their obsession with not disturbing private industry so great that they’re willing to let people die?

Private industry could have been directed weeks ago to manufacture all necessary medical equipment. Doctors, even governors were begging for it. Those responsible for the withhold of resources have betrayed this nation. This problem is not complicated. It is horrifyingly simple.

It is completely unacceptable that any doctor at any hospital in the United States is lacking the medical equipment they need in order to handle this. The richest, most powerful nation in the world has a govt that in the most infuriating, immoral way has let down its own citizens

It’s when huge industries are so powerful they’re basically monopolies.Their power makes it harder for little guys to get in. Government should keep them in their appropriate lane, not just serve their financial interests - which they do now because of all the money in politics.

Corporate conglomeration does NOT empower the private sector for anyone except the few who then become economic overlords of the many. It actually makes it harder, not easier, for small businesses and entrepreneurial enterprises to flourish.

This is an important issue (see also Michael Lewis’s book “The Fifth Risk”). It happens when your ideological goal is to starve the government in order to transfer main power to the corporate sector. It’s the kind of thing we need to be thinking about now. nytimes.com/2020/03/26/us/po…
