The most evolved contemporary society has elements of both capitalism & socialism, in approportionate relationship that protects both individual freedom & care for the common good. This shouldn’t be either/or but rather both/and. It’s not a binary choice in theory or in practice.

I don’t know what history class you could possibly be talking about. Capitalism has been responsible for some very good things and it has also been responsible for some very bad things. The democratic socialism Bernie Sanders is talking about is the opposite of what you describe.

Since 1980s the main organizing principle for US public policy has been short-term corporate profits, a capitalism untethered from ethical & moral responsibility to people & planet. What we need now is a fundamental course correction from an economic to a humanitarian bottom line

I agree with Scott. And Democratic socialism is NOT communism. That ridiculous caricature needs to be challenged every time it appears. And shame on Tom Steyer for saying on the debate stage that Bernie stands for a govt takeover of the private sector. He absolutely knows better.

Collectivized hatred aroused by fear of the “other” is one of the most dangerous forces on the planet & has been throughout history. Only force powerful enough to override it is collectivized love. Gandhi & MLK took love beyond the personal to the political; now we need to too.
