That’s for Portlanders and Oregonians to deal with.

If that’s the case they should reach out to the Governor & mayor and ask if there’s something they could do to help or whether they felt the local police had the situation under control. We need to protect our Constitution more than we need to protect the façade of a building.

4/ In 1963 JFK sent federal troops to Alabama to force George Wallace to desegregate the U of A. So yes, a president can send in troops. But what’s going on now is nothing but tough guy election year theatre. It’s an unneeded dog whistle with illegal behavior by untrained troops.

3/ I use the word “invade” deliberately, to counter the false Trump narrative that the federal troops are there to help, to provide “Law & order.” That’s an old political canard. The troops being lawless themselves, they can hardly restore law and order.

2/ Oregon’s governor didn’t ask for help because she didn’t want it, and she & the mayor of Portland have made it clear the federal troops are unwelcome. TBW says they’re rolling out a plan this week to invade other cities as well, where presumably they will be equally unwelcome.

1/ If riots or any other type of emergency is going on in a state, a governor can ask for federal help. If they don’t, it’s because they don’t believe the situation warrants it.

The people of Portland are doing just that. Showing up in big numbers and refusing to be violent is the key, because it makes it dramatically clear that any violence is coming from the other side. Prayers for everyone’s safety.🙏🏻

It cannot be said too many times: The American people have the right to protest. People gathering on a street is not a riot. The destruction of federal property was minimal compared to violence being perpetrated on citizens by federal agents. US cities are not occupied territory.

“It’s just us normal people out there,” he said. “...You hear people like [President] Trump say it’s just a bunch of wacko fringe people in liberal cities who are out there, but no way. We’re all just normal people who think what’s happening is wrong.” washingtonpost.com/nation/20…

The federal occupation of an American city must come to an end now. It is causing, not squelching violence - and the American people will not have it.The perpetrators of violence here are those wielding teargas & pepper balls, kidnapping & terrorizing citizens. #FedsGoHome

What arson & assaults? You think graffiti on buildings is reason for a federal troop occupation of an American city? I’ll tell you what violent assault is: tear gas, pepper balls, kidnapping people & putting them in unmarked vans, breaking someone’s hands, shooting rubber bullets

People standing in the street is not a riot! There is no reason for federal troops to be there, and the citizens of Portland want them gone. The fed behavior while there has been unconstitutional. The people of America aren’t “occupied.”

Not everything has to be about color or sex or religion - or even liberal or conservative. When it comes to federal troops invading our cities and trampling our Constitution, all of us are Americans.

I’m loving the people of Portland so much right now. They’ll be remembered for their courage tonight. They’re creating a template for everyone, and if TBW (Trump/Barr/Wolf) actually bring this horror show to other cities then people will be ready for them. This is history, guys.

All jokes and wonderfulness about the #WallofMoms aside, it is seriously not OK that middle-aged women are being teargassed and pepper balled night after night during a Coronavirus pandemic. Two nights in a row already. #TheFedsNeedToLeaveNow
