Confederate flag to a black person is like a Nazi flag to a Jew; such symbols need to be removed. Confederate statues could be in a museum, replaced by winning submissions in a contest to create great contemporary art to replace them. We can respond to the past & reset the future
We can't "end" it or "defeat it", we have to override it. If we had spent more time proactively fostering justice, inclusion, brotherhood, and deep democracy, then the dark scourge of nationalism wouldn't have so easily taken root. We have to do now what we failed to do before.

2) What that shows & what we forget at our peril, is that history doesn’t always move in a straight line. Sometimes it goes forward and sometimes it goes backwards. When people don’t vigilantly and proactively protect and foster the good, what is not good will take up the space.
1) In 1965, the Voting Rights Act was signed into law; in 2015, the Supreme Court issued a ruling that gutted it. They said it was “no longer necessary” to protect voting rights, but of course as soon as they issued their ruling voter suppression efforts began around the country.
