This is why I was reluctant to get into home automation. I picked devices that will still function when the cloud vanishes, even if the smarts go away. I wish someone would just build a home server/bridge and have everything work locally.

This is rather narrow minded. This network of boxes and things can also be used to turn your fridge on or off probably or tell your toaster to get itself ready for you walking over to it to put bread in.
