Twitter chose 140 chars because it was originally based on SMS, which had that limit. SMS may have chose 140 chars for the reason you gave.

I find it hard to believe that a. 300+ meters works, b. it's the only other iPhone on the two planes.

They just don't want heavy electronics flying about the cabin if there's an emergency during takeoff / landing. Put it away for 5 minutes!
