firefox is warning people on HTTP pages that their logins could be compromised... and they all think they have a virus

Didn't think about that, I forget that non - Linux people actually have to worry about viruses.

They should have had a message after the update explaining that the message was new and what it meant.

Yeah, good idea, terrible implementation. Kind of par for the course for OSS.
Ha ha let me reword that, not that the implementation is bad but that it is unintuitive and confusing.
Exactly, I love it, but I totally understand that it's not exactly user friendly.

Just use IE 8. It doesn't have these warnings, so its secure.

any errors this sort of software generates should be Google-able, and your site should be the top result
Google Chrome also changes the front of your url bar to insecure if you go to a http based login
