Too many things have "smart" functionality, for so little benefit. For each neat thing there's dozens of things where it's way more hassle and resources than it's worth.

I wonder how many firmware updates are “the basic functionality is fine but the data harvesting/ad serving part is broken or interfering with basic functionality so here we are, updating a Christmas tree”

It's actually some lights...was a backer a couple of years back...check them out...my 1.0 version still work and my kids love to create their own patterns for it...
