Protected bike lanes are good...if done right. The ones on Valencia in SF have uncontrolled gaps for cars to cross into alleys and drives. Parked cars block all sightlines, and cars dive through these gaps. I've been hit twice and too many near misses to count.

In this case the solution is extremely simple: HUGE fines for illegal parking. And if parking that blocks sight lines is legal, the solution is even simpler: fire the idiot who designed that.
