Ever be making a left turn at an intersection, because you have the light, and some bicycle starts riding out in the middle of your path of travel, like they're suicidal? Ever have a bicycle cut you off in traffic, changing into your lane with a flash of the hand to signal?

In California cyclists are protected by law - you shouldn’t drive closer than 2 meters to a bicyclist. Does it help with safety? Nope. While driver is at fault, the mentality is saying those jaywalkers should stay out of the road.

The impetus for their cycling infra was looking at the sharp increase in pedestrian and cyclist deaths in the mid-century. Instead of shrugging and building bigger roads like elsewhere, they make ped- and cycle-first infra. It has clearly worked.

The best bit about cycling in the Netherlands is it is just part of the culture. You are not a cyclist you are a person on a bike, even the CEO of the company, the PM or the Queen will get on a bike if it’s the best way to get somewhere.

Ok sure but the way to fix that is by building....something. not a feature in a car
