Didn’t they try this before and it completely backfired? I remember being able to trick it by literally taking a tiny piece of their lids and taping it over the sensor

The good thing about coffeemakers is that you don't develop "vendor lock-in" around a branded ecosystem. If you get pissed at the DRM, you can buy a different brand without throwing away an investment in Keurig coffee cups, Keurig sugar packets, Keurig stirrers, etc.
