Inevitable. The ongoing costs of keeping IoT devices connected has to be paid for by someone. This is a consequence of short term strategic planning. Lifecycle costing is a concept new to the legacy manufacturers.

Renault went one step further and actually removed physical buttons from their key so you have to buy the service. Sales guy told me it was a feature! Free service at start so only impacts non dealer resales.

Guess modding cars now gets a whole new meaning. I bet there is money to be made if you can unlock the full battery use in a Tesla without having to pay through the nose for it or get a monthly fee product for free. It's cable TV all over again!
