the next logical step in the 'all the hardware is already there, but we didn't put the button in' approach to cars. Car trip computers they do this for constantly.

Honestly, this seems par for the course for a company like BMW; this is merely an extension of their historic practice of engineering components to fail rather than for reliability, necessitating a rather extreme high-cost maintenance model to ensure consistent revenue flow.
