This is a really valuable resource, the missing semester on computing tooling that students need before learning the actual meat of CS: missing.csail.mit.edu/ Looks very useful to anyone wanting to learn basics of Unix env, workflows, build systems, security basics, etc.

Imagine if the CDC said you don't have to wear condoms as long as you are both STD negative. You'd be like: yeah, technically that is true but in the *real* world we *actually* live in, this advice means people will wear condoms less often and spread STDs more.

As I once said to a potential employer, “You obviously have me confused with somebody who needs this job.”
Enterprise companies demanding their employees back 100% in the office are in for a rude awakening. You are going to lose your loyal and talented team members who will seek out remote or hybrid. CEO's attempting to yank us back to 2019 are going to lose the talent battle.

I hope our local businesses keep requiring masks until vaccination rates are higher because you know anti-vaxxers are gonna take advantage of this. I'm totally fine wearing my mask indoors, even being fully vaxxed.
UPDATE: If you are fully vaccinated against #COVID19, you can resume activities without wearing a mask or staying 6 feet apart, except where required by federal, state, local, tribal or territorial laws, incl. local business and workplace guidance. More: bit.ly/3btJaFU

I’m not sure anybody should be looking to me for a parenting playbook, but I do have a unique set of skills…
Got my oldest a phone. I took a page from the @hal_pomeranz playbook. "Don't do anything stupid with this. You know what I do."

Oh wow, this reminds me of moving to Eugene. It’s not just social pleasantries—people really want to know how you’re doing. I thought they were trying to steal my soul at first.

What you get is whatever Windows event logs and Linux logs happen to be on each system. Plus one random collection of network logs (firewall, CloudTrail, etc) and you don’t get to pick which one. Welcome to my world!

/dev/kmem, which provides access to the #kernel's address space, is going away with #Linux 5.13: git.kernel.org/torvalds/c/bb… All major distributions disabled it in their .configs for a while already anyway. For the backstory see: lwn.net/Articles/851531/
