tr [:upper:] [:lower:] is super useful for ad-hoc data cleanup while bashing around. Something like: tr [:upper:] [:lower:] <hostnamesWithVaryingCase.txt | sort -u > uniquehostnames.txt (NB: I avoided useless use of cat this time...)
