I default to awk instead of cut. AWK are the initials of the developers; Aho, Weinberger, & Kernighan. If memory serves, awk now supports unicode thanks to a recent update made by Kernighan.

AWK come from the initials of it's three authors Alfred Aho, Peter Weinberger and Brian Kernighan.
