I would like to see an honest account of the annual cost of ransomware to the US economy. Because it seems that a fraction of that cost spent towards addressing global inequality and increasing world-wide cooperation would go a long way.

No. Cybersecurity is a prerequisite of global equality. We can’t maintain equitable access to social services if those services are getting rekt by threat actors. And those threat actors are often staunch opponents of equality because they thrive in and depend on corruption.

My experience is that the threat actors are people stuck in untenable kleptocracies who are just trying to make a life for themselves and their families like anybody else. Unfortunately, with few options, taking money from distant Western democracies seems like a good plan.

So...you're advocating collectivising ransom and paying it at the state level, so it can trickle down to the criminals?

Global inequality? Because we have that solved here? A free market economy not fucked up by corrupt politicians and corporate overlords would be a nice start

That depends a lot on how you define inequality or the fix. For a country without real national healthcare, we do spend billions on it. Even more when you add spending by the states, which most people don't consider. Global is different, but we spend billions internationally.

What? You mean the only true way to fix infosec and privacy is to make the information less valuable? I'm shocked heh.

You're assuming that the ransomware guys are "have nots" taking from the "haves." I don't know if that's the case. These guys seem to have an awful lot of resources behind them. It wouldn't surprise me if they wind up being state-supported in one way or another.

Figure out how entrepreneurs can profit from that and you've got a winning formula.
