We are just over a week into school at the Florida high school where my wife teaches. Teachers and students are already coming down with suspected cases of COVID-19. "Suspected" because it is taking so long to get test results these days. 1/n

This morning my wife received notice that one of her students was going into quarantine because of possible exposure to an infected individual. That student showed up to class today, completely unaware that they were supposed to be in quarantine. 2/n

If you have school aged children, and have the option, keep them home for school. Do not believe the quaint fictions that your school board is telling you about their plans to keep students and teachers safe. They are utter BS. Schools are a petri dish. 4/n

If your schools have not reopened yet, teachers and concerned parents should FIGHT your school board if necessary to prevent schools from reopening. Everybody's lives are at risk, and magical thinking is not going to prevent people from getting sick. 5/n

Because our school system was forced to offer in-person, distance, and "hybrid" solutions for teaching this year, all classes are suffering. If we had spent the summer planning to do distance learning correctly, we likely would have had better outcomes all around. 6/n

But now we have a unfunded, patchwork system that amounts to little more than throwing webcams at teachers and telling them, "We'll figure it out as we go along." 7/n

Are there going to be lawsuits out of this debacle? Of course there are. And where is the money going to come from? Our already underfunded schools and counties. 8/n
