Spec's say "Connect multiple input sources Thru HDMI", can it split the screen up displaying multiple sources without needing software on the source a'la LG?

Correct. I was able to split the screen in half and have one computer on one half (HDMI) and a second computer on the other half (Display Port) without any special software. There are two DP and one HDMI connector that you can mix and match with.
