Hey Hal! I had a HDD displaying similar symptoms about 5 years ago and swapping out the PCB Board did the trick for me.

Hey Hal, you know you can always shoot it over if you are stuck. Do NOT use spinrite, or any other tool for that matter, unless or until you know exactly what is wrong. Call any time. You know where to find me.

do you hear clicking sounds? when you attach the usb connector to pc does it recognise that something was connected?

Try using a Guidance Tableau write blocker and file copying to a SATA device or a USB device... if it is not physically damaged, it will do the trick.

I appreciate your ideas anyway. If it was just a busted file system I could deal with that. But there seems to be some sort of hardware issue. Next step is validating my adapter connection with a different drive.
