I honestly do not understand why people with just a small bag/backpack insist on putting it up in the overhead rather than under the seat. Not only is it rude to others but why would you want to have to pull it down later? I guess if you want the room for your legs?

It really is all about the legroom. I have to ride with my knees up under my chin if my laptop bag is under the seat in front of me. Seat pitches in coach are inhumane.
