We got several answers where people looked for a string in the file path rather than the file content. Props to JakubUrbanec for chiming in with: "find /path/to/files -iname "*string*"
Interestingly, the "-a" and"-l" options are redundant here. "-a" normally gives you matching strings from non-ASCII files. But since we're only printing file names ("-l"), it doesn't matter.

Honorable mention to 🐘PhilHagen@infosec.exchange for improving the answer with "rail grep": "grep -rail string /path/to/files". That will get you case-insensitive matching.

Props to 🐘feld@bikeshed.party for the first correct answer to yesterday's #Linux #DFIR #CommandLine #Trivia: "grep -rl string /path/to/files"

From the Linux command-line you want to search a directory structure of files and return the paths to all files that contain a particular string. What command do you use? (Because we all need daily #Linux #DFIR #CommandLine #Trivia)

I’m using the basic Mastadon for iOS app from the App Store. Seems fine so far.
Beginning an experiment to use Mastodon as my primary posting platform. Mastodon content will be mirrored to Twitter for now. Just a reminder that I am 🐘hal_pomeranz@infosec.exchange

I'm likely to cut over to Mastodon as my primary posting platform, though I'll probably mirror content to Twitter for a while.
The hacker / infosec Mastodon servers have really reached critical mass to contain useful community and information. If you haven't tried it out yet, I really recommend it. There's enough intel and news to be viable at this point.

My dog ignored the human clock and woke me up according to her belly clock. I capitulated.

Anybody else using moa.party or another crossposting service for Mastodon/Twitter? Recommendations?

I’ve been doing a little technical advisory work for @SpyderbatInc and am a fan of their product. They have a free tier which allows you to try them out on up to 5 nodes.

Lots of useful advice in this thread. I have survived two major recessions by minimizing overhead/costs, diversifying my income stream, and maintaining a strong professional network even in good economic times.
"Tech workers who didn't live through the dot com crash, you have no idea what's coming. Prepare yourselves." This isn't actionable. People who don't know what's coming probably don't know how to prepare for it. Dotcom crash survivors, what is your actionable advice for people?

And we are delighted (and thats why they get their own tweet) to also have @hal_pomeranz talking about files deleted on XFS and recovering them.

Oh my! @yesthattom does a great job encapsulating what USENIX LISA meant to so many of us of a certain technical generation. Great history lesson here! usenix.org/publications/logi…
