Set up Linux VMs in your lab. Hack them using Metasploit or similar. Use the techniques at archive.org/details/HalLinux… to investigate. This course comes with several Linux images to practice with and is free.

Recent Congressional activity makes it very clear that in the majority BOTH parties are the party of corporate interests, the wealthy, and the well-connected. The rest is wedge-issues designed to keep people voting against their own best interests.

Portsentry is awesome, even today. And Logsentry is still a good quick and dirty way to process logs.
