“Who could have forseen all this?” If only there were 300 years of history of world powers getting involved in Afghanistan. If only the USA had a track record of abandoning local allies since the 1960’s. I am ashamed for us and it is remarkable that we find allies anywhere.

My (raised in a Kosher household) father tells the story of one of his first Foreign Service trips. He complimented his host on the excellent corned beef and was informed it was ham he’d been eating.

Modern Olympics already has open-water swims, long distance runs, shooting, and various martial arts events. Seems like some updated pentathlon could be cobbled together.

Personally, I find the horse events fascinating. So much training happening to compete at that level and achieve synergy between human and animal.

“Modern pentathlon” was created circa WW1 as a combination of skills appropriate to soldiers (particularly couriers) of that era—riding, running, swimming, and combat with pistol and sword. Adapted from ancient pentathlon which tested skills for Greek soldiers of antiquity.
