New project. GitLab, where nobody else will find it? Or GitHub, who will scrape it and sell it back to me in an ML slurry?

considering Copilot's usage of source code is quite transformative, therefore arguably fair use; are they specifically barred from training on open source code hosted on GitLab? Otherwise, they'll be able to use it regardless of where it's hosted.

A higher barrier to scrape a competitor than to use their own data is all. Licensing aside, being sold derivations of my free labor is not in the spirit of my sharing it, and other things equal, I'd like it to make that harder.

Understandable. Just to be clear I wasn't defending GitHub, being an Iranian I've had my account restricted at more than one occasion so decided to self-host and only use GitHub to contribute to open source projects, mostly.

We often forget the "distributed" in "distributed version control system". A second copy is cheap, but losing access to the only copy is super expensive.
