Code is a liability, not an asset. So goal of software engineer is delivering the maximum amount of desired functionality at the cost of the least amount of code complexity, even as desired functionality evolves over time.

I agree. I often see young programmers claiming that mainframe cobol systems should be replaced with c and c++. They of course don't know that the specs for the applications are long gone as are the test suites. They don't understand the DBs and other systems the apps referen
