A software skill people not often appreciated outside security: probing the emergent semantics of a complex system. First understood this at Stripe while integrating various financial backends. Turns out to be extremely useful for building systems for training neural networks.

There's so much to learn, and so much more coming at us; I feel like the sum of human knowledge is now a rolling-window summation rather than a sum total.

It’s really fun to find people in the AI community re-discovering the basic principles of software and systems engineering, as if it were something brand new. BFW Greg, this is not a phenomenon unique to security, either.

Can you describe, maybe by example, what emergent semantics are, and what they look like in real life?
