In a startup, you should seek out activities that seem hard, boring, annoying, and unscalable. The highest-value tasks are often hiding amongst them, and no one else has noticed because they seem unappealing on the surface.

That is why consistent pragmatism will take you nowhere other than consistent mediocrity. You need to act on things that appear neither important nor urgent, it is those activities that can bring the highest impact and value to the business.

I often think about the strategy @paulg lays out in Hackers and Painters: when there are two equally valuable features to build, always choose the harder one, because it intrinsically gives you a competitive advantage.
