The difference between a startup and a large corporation is that in large corporations, everyone is assigned a seat and a desk and a parking spot and a cubicle, and in startups everyone is assigned a task.

Hmm… I’ve been many times in both. Was never assigned a seat. In both cases was either task oriented, or more often, I got to invent my own job (this was especially true in the big firms…but you have to learn the art of storytelling to pull that off anywhere).

Hint: Every ‘large corporation’ once was a startup. They wouldn’t be operating as effectively if they gave their employees just tasks.

Having worked at two Fortune 50 companies and founded startups, I can confidently say this is a gross generalization.

Startups are often young, innovative, collaborative, focused on growth, while corporations are often established, slow-moving, hierarchical and focused on productivity.

I have heard stories about very early days at Flipkart, new joiners used to sit on floor on the day of joining since the company was growing at a crazy rate. If the team align on a vision, seating space will be the last thing they look for.
