r-base 4.3.1-3 adds a Debian-specific 'Breaks:' creating trouble for the Ubuntu repos, see issue below. I have addressed it in #r2u which is ok now, and contacted @marutterstat for a possible Ubuntu build fix. Sorry for the trouble this caused. #rstatsgithub.com/eddelbuettel/r2u/…
No disrespect to nix, but this is a) a problem we had solved in Debian/Ubuntu a decade ago and b) made easy more recently via #r2u. I just ran
docker run --rm -ti rocker/r2u:jammy \
Rscript -e 'install.packages("xlsx")'
and of course it just worked. Try it. #rstats
The biggest issues are toolchain changes, as well as following updates to the spec used 'at that other site we all follow'. I had started with a pair for clang and gcc and at some point last year the clang one stopped building. So yeppers, maintenance ahead ...
This tweet constitutes my bi-annual "Thank You!" 🙏 to @winston_chang for his sumo-style container which once again let me chase and pinpoint an ASAN/clang issue my own ASAN/gcc container did not tickle.
Also, CRAN is awesome in its rigour. #rstatsgithub.com/wch/r-debug
Even better that is Oak Park (aka Chicago's first and hence oldest suburb) and hence technically outside the city proper. I am about a mile over in River Forest and now a happy 20+ year resident of the area.
Fantastic. I shall put these on my reading list. Been here 23 years and still trying to understand the place better than I do.
(And still have regrets I never managed to meet @vahavb when she had your post.)
Be well. Be kind. Pay it forward. Sounds trite but amazing what a kind gesture or word can mean to someone’s entire day. Saying from someone who knows. Sometimes it is something as small as a smile instead of a snarky remark that can shift the course of an entire day. 🌹
The CRAN Policy Watch account is demi-dead as I cannot have the cronjob post but his first change in just about a year is significant enough to do it manually: a new link to a new 'Using Rust in CRAN Packages' document.

That's trolling, Gabor. I have R jobs on cron running for a decade+, I have designed / written / owned R-based pipelines in production. There is a "doctor doctor it hurts when I do this" element coming from a subset of the #Rstats universe. "So don't do use that."
How it started (Baltimore, 2022)
How it is going (Oak Park, 2023)
Many thanks to @MattDEisenberg for giving @julia_edd an academic home at @bsph_hpm once she graduated @CornellBPP. I will now continue riff on her being unemployed (as of today). Temporarily at least.
