I think it's more like ... a growing metro area that is now served by both the pre-existing volunteer fire departments and a smaller corp of fulltime firefighters. By necessity, these 2 groups operate differently, but they all want to protect people from 馃敟s!

And sometimes seeming to be uncompromising in using the bully pulpit and large following to pave over existing (developed over years) packages without valuing some features/functions developed over time. i.e. patchwork vs. cowplot::plot_grid()

I think me and @ClausWilke has a pretty good relationship and no one feels plowed over - I really am uncomfortable with the insinuation of bullying

GH doesn't give "Rcoins" but volunteers may rely on their reputation to monetize their OSS work. Regardless of motive, "making things better" and excluding current volunteers can have unintended negative consequences for them.

It is also the opposite of what made Open Source / Free Software great : - cooperation in kind - the best design winning - friendly (and mostly cooperative) competition. These days, it looks more like the "embrace + extend (+ extinguish)" playbook. Which is pretty sad.
