Try echo "MAKE=make -j8" >> ~/.R/Makevars which should also work for R CMD check, R CMD INSTALL,

@eddelbuettel Could not get it to work with Makevars. Ended up setting `MAKE=${MAKE} -j8` in /etc/R/Renviron.site. That works.
