Terrific piece. Honestly the most common reason I have heard (and I have heard it a lot) from suburbanites to buy e-bikes is to skip the school car drop off queue
I tried really hard not to be judge mental in this article about school car line for @TheAtlantic. It’s a big mess. We could (and should) do better for parents and schools theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv…

We survived by being in walking distance to primary and middle schools, and an easy bike ride to the high school. Location. Location. Location. Oh and city designs matter.

My primary school was walking distance but I took a bus - later two - over a distance of about seven miles to get to secondary school

Birmingham, England, is not an especially well-designed city on that front. It is almost American. Lots of schools are on the outskirts of town where land was cheap in the 1950s

Yes, my own case as a kid in Lower Saxony was simple too (bicycle) but I was mentioning the more recent experience as a parent here in Cook County. Worked well for us, but during runs in the area one sees lots of cars idling in school queues.
