A question to my peers and #rstats experts: are there any good tutorials/resources on including an external (non-R) dependency in your R package (like in the magick package)? The dependency is open source, available on Github, and must be compiled. Thanks!

That is a rich topic in its full generality (do you need to compile the resource or not?) when reflecting the full set of OSs (windows can be tricky). A pre-print of mine discusses it but even that cannot cover all aspects. #rstats arxiv.org/abs/1911.06416

Yes, the dependency needs compiling (a fairly simple one though) and I would like it to be available on Windows as well as POSIX OS. Can it be managed by an OS-dependant script that downloads and uses the local compiler (or Rtools) to compile it?
